How to Access Gmail with Mozilla Thunderbird?
If you are using Mozilla Thunderbird email client on your computer, you can set up your Gmail account on it for an easy access to your emails. When you would have once configured your Gmail account on Thunderbird, emails will be synchronized between the local version of your Thunderbird and the web-based Gmail.

Steps to Setup Mozilla Thunderbird for Gmail
Before following the below-mentioned instructions, make sure set up IMAP and change your SMTP settings for allowing Gmail to be accessible in other email clients. Here are the steps to set up IMAP in your Gmail account.
SET UP IMAP
1.) Sign into your Gmail account on your computer.
2.) Click on the Settings option (under Gear icon) located on the top-right corner of your screen.
3.) Under the Settings window, you will need to click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
4.) Next, you will need to select Enable IMAP option under the IMAP Access section.
5.) After that, simply click on the Save Changes option to save the changes you made to the Settings of your Gmail account.
CHANGE SMTP & OTHER SETTINGS IN EMAIL CLIENT
You will need to update your Mozilla Thunderbird program with the following information.

Once you are done with the above-given steps, you can follow these steps to set up your Gmail account on Mozilla Thunderbird.
1.) Open Mozilla Thunderbird and go to the File > New > Existing Mail Account. A “Mail Account Setup” dialog will appear on your screen.
2.) After entering your account information such as real name, email address, and password, Thunderbird will try to automatically configure your Gmail account.
3.) Once the automatic configuration process gets completed, click on the Done option and log in with your Google account (if prompted) and you are done. Thunderbird will start downloading your current emails and get it ready for use.
However, if the automatic configuration doesn’t help you set up your Gmail account on Thunderbird, you can follow the below-mentioned instructions to set up your Gmail account on Thunderbird manually.
1.) Start by opening the Account Settings option in your Mozilla Thunderbird email program. For this, click on the Tools menu and select Account Settings option. Alternatively, you can click on the Application menu button (three horizontal lines) and select Options and Account Settings options from the sub-menu.
NOTE: You will find each email or newsgroup accounts that are already configured with your Thunderbird program on the left-hand side of the Account Settings dialog. All these accounts belong to the top-level folders shown in the All Folders list.
2.) You will need to go to the bottom section of the left-hand side pane to select the Account Actions and then the Add Mail Account option.
4.) In the provided fields, you will need to enter your Gmail account details such as your Your name, Email address, and Password and click on the Continue option. Thunderbird will try to determine and configure your account settings as per the portion of your email address (the part after the “@” symbol which is “gmail.com”).
5.) Considering the information in the above-given table, the Outgoing Server for Gmail account will be configured as follows:
- Server Name:gmail.com
- Port: 587
- Use name and Password: checked
- User Name: Enter your Gmail account’s User ID (without “@gmail.com”). As an example, if your email address is Phillip@gmail.com, your username is “Phillip”). However, if you are using Google Apps for Domains, you will need to use your complete Gmail address (for example, “Phillip@yourdomain.com”).
- Connection Security: STARTTLS
Save the information for the new Outgoing server, select your new email account from the list. Go to the Outgoing Server (SMTP) field; simply choose the SMTP server from the drop-down list. As other items on the page get automatically created when you enter the account details, you can alter and extend them as required.
6.) Next, click on the Server Settings option under your new account and check whether the following fields match the settings mentioned above in the table.
- Server Type: IMAP
- Server Name:gmail.com
- User Name: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Port: 993
- Connection Security: SSL/TLS
6.) After entering the suggested information in the appropriate fields, click the Re-test button. This will help you ensure that the settings configured by you are correct. If the test’s result completes successfully, click Done to save the settings.
You should then be able to send and receive emails in your Gmail account using Mozilla Thunderbird.
